Summit Ridge Roofing
Service area
Thornhill
Thornhill's housing stock is older on average than Markham's, with a large share of 1960s to 1980s builds. Many of those homes are now on their third roof, and the original decking is often thinner than what's used today.
Housing stock and what fails first
The roofs here
Lower-pitch side-split and back-split bungalows are common here, along with mature trees close to the roofline. Shade keeps moss and granule loss in play, and low pitch makes ice-and-water coverage more important, not less.
Freeze-thaw · wind uplift · north-facing slopes
What an Ontario winter does to a roof
Freeze & thaw
Around here the temperature crosses zero dozens of times between December and March. Meltwater runs down the slope, reaches the cold overhang past the heated wall, and refreezes. Do that repeatedly and you get a ridge of ice at the eave with standing water behind it, sitting on the roof instead of running off it. That water finds nail holes. This is exactly what ice-and-water shield is for, and exactly why its coverage distance matters.
North-facing slopes
The north slope gets almost no winter sun. Snow sits on it for weeks after the south slope has cleared, and it stays cold enough to hold ice at the eave much longer. If you only ever see problems on one side of your house, that is usually why, and the fix is ventilation and shield coverage, not more shingles.
Wind uplift
An aging shingle loses the sealant bond along its lower edge. Once that seal breaks, wind gets underneath and levers the shingle up. It rarely tears off on the first big blow — it lifts, drops, and lifts again over several seasons until it goes. Rakes, ridges, and any edge facing an open field or a wide street take it first.
The age curve
Asphalt shingles in this climate realistically run 18 to 25 years, not the 30 or 40 on the wrapper. If your roof is original and the house went up in the 1990s, you are at or past the end of that curve. That does not automatically mean replace it this year — it means get it looked at before it decides for you.

Common questions from
Thornhill
homeowners
Do you actually work in this area?
Yes — it is one of the eight towns we cover across Markham and York Region. If you are just outside the radius, call anyway and we will tell you straight.
How soon can someone get back to me?
Most calls are returned the same day or the next. If water is coming in right now, say so when you call and we will treat it as urgent.
What does an estimate cost?
Nothing. Estimates are free, and you get the pricing in writing before any work starts.
Will it be your crew or a subcontractor?
Our own crew. The people who quote your roof are the people who do the work — we do not subcontract.
Are you insured?
Yes. We are WSIB covered and carry liability insurance, and we have been roofing here since 2011.
What happens after the job is finished?
You get a photo set, the warranty paperwork and a direct number. If something is not right in the first two years, we come back.
